You can put this solution on YOUR website! On August 28, the Corwin family recieved 27 pieces of mail, consisting of magazines, bills, letters and ads.
m + b + L + a= 27
----------------------
If they recieved the same number of magazines as letters, three more bills than letters, and five more ads than bills, how many magazines did they recieve? Write an algebraic equation.
---
m = L
b = L + 3
a = b + 5
-----------------
Substitute to get:
L + (L+3) + L + (L+3)+5 = 27
4L + 11 = 27
4L = 16
L = 4 = m (# of letters and number of magazines)
-----------------
b = L+3 ; b = 7 (# of bills)
-----------------
a = b + 5 = 12 (# of ads)
