Question 260475: A boat travels 60 km upstream (against the current) in 5 hours. The boat travels the same distance downstream in 3 hours. What is the rate of the boat in still water? What is the rate of the current?
I need to use a system of 2 equations in 2 variables in the answer. Answer by checkley77(12844) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! D=RT
60=R*5
R=60/5
R=12 KMH. GOING UPSTREAM.
60=R*3
R=60/3
R=20 KMH. GOING DOWNSTREAM.
(20-12)/2=8/2=4 KMH IS THE CURRENT SPEED.
12+4=16 KMH IS THE BOAT SPEED
20-4=16 DITTO.
