Question 260004: Please help me solve this equation (3+x)^2=49. I can't figure out how to solve for x

You can put this solution on YOUR website! (3+x)^2=49
(3+x)
(3+x) multiply
-----
9+3x+3x+x^2 combine the x terms.
9+6x+x^2=49 subtract 49 from both sides.
9+6x+x^2-49=0 combine the numbers.
x^2+6x-40=0 factor the equation.
(x-4)(x+10)=0 set each factor =0 & solve for x.
x-4=0 add 4 to each side.
x=4 ans.
x+10=0 subtract 10 from each side.
x=-10 ans.
-------------------
Proof:
(3+4)^2=49
7^2=49
(3-10)^2=49
-7^2=49
49=49
