Question 259432: Solve this problem by using a two order system.
With the wind, a jet takes 3 hours to fly 1,890 miles. Against the wind, it takes 3 3/8 hours for the same trip. Find the wind speed and the plane's air speed.

You can put this solution on YOUR website! With the wind, a jet takes 3 hours to fly 1,890 miles. Against the wind, it takes 3 3/8 hours for the same trip.
Find the wind speed and the plane's air speed.
-------------------
With the wind DATA:
distance = 1890 miles ; time = 3 hrs ; rate = d/t = 1890/3 = 630 mph
------------------------------
Against the wind DATA:
distance = 1890 miles ; time = 27/8 hrs ; rate = d/t = 1890/(27/8) = 560 mph
------------------------------
Equations:
plane + wind = 630 mph
plane - wind = 560 mph
-----------------------------
2*plane = 1190
plane speed in still air = 595 mph
Substitute to solve for "wind":
595 + wind = 630
wind speed = 35 mph
