You can put this solution on YOUR website!
WHat we are doing is adding an x to the left and the right of the length and then an x to the top and bottom of the width.
The original dimensions were
22 by 17.
The new dimensions are
(22 + 2x) by (17 + 2x).
we are given perimeter information, so we have
(i) 2%2822%2B2x%29+%2B+2%2817%2B2x%29+=+102
step 1 - Solving for x, use distributive property to get
(ii) 44+%2B+4x+%2B+34+%2B+4x+=+102
step 2 - combine like terms to get
78+%2B+8x+=+102
step 3 - subtract 78 to get
(iii) 8x+=+24
divide to get
(iv) x+=+3
We have added 6 inches to the length and width, or the new dimensions are 28 x 23
