Question 258664: Solve for y. +2y%5E2-8y%2B58=%28y-7%29%5E2+
I tried this:
+2y%5E2-8y%2B58=%28y-7%29%5E2+
+y%5E2-4y%2B29=%28y-7%29%28y-7%29+
+y%5E2-4y%2B29=y%5E2-14y%2B49+
+0=y%5E2-4y%2B29-y%5E2%2B14y-49+
+0=10y-20+
+y=-2+

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Solve for y. +2y%5E2-8y%2B58=%28y-7%29%5E2+
I tried this:
+2y%5E2-8y%2B58=%28y-7%29%5E2+
+y%5E2-4y%2B29=%28y-7%29%28y-7%29+

You messed up right there. You divided the left side
by 2 and didn't divide the right side by 2. You cannot
divide only one side by something without dividing the
other side by it too. What you should have done is not
to have divided the left side by 2, but instead factor out 2
leaving the 2 outside the parentheses, like this:

red%28%222%28%22%29y%5E2-4y%2B29red%28%22%29%22%29%22=%22%28y-7%29%28y-7%29+

Now I'll bet you can finish it by distributing that 2 into the
parentheses. Answer: y=3 (only one solution)
