The perimeter of a rectangular garden is 40 ft. The width is 2 ft more than one half the length. Find the length and width.

Perimeter = 2(L + W)
W = (1/2)L + 2
----
Substitute for "W" and solve for "L":
40 = 2(L + (1/2)L + 2)
20 = (3/2)L + 2
(3/2)L = 18
L = 12

The formula for perimeter is
(i) P = 2L + 2w
we also know that
(ii) w = (1/2)L + 2
by substitution, we get
(iii)
(iv)
(v)
L = 12
This means w = 8.
