You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let e = Eva's present age
Let b = brother's present age
;
Write an equation for each statement:
:
"Eva is 6 years older than her brother,"
e = b + 6
:
"In 4 years, Eva will be 26 more than 1/2 of brother's age."
e + 4 = .5(b+4) + 26
e + 4 = .5b + 2 + 26
e = .5b + 28 - 4
e = .5b + 24
Replace e with (b+6) from the 1st statement:
b + 6 = .5b + 24
b - .5b = 24 - 6
.5b = 18
b = 18%2F.5
b = 36 yrs old is brother Al
and
36 + 6 = 42 yrs is sister Eva
;
;
See if that works in the statement:
In 4 years, Eva will be 26 more than 1/2 of brother's age."
42 + 4 = .5(36+4) + 26
46 = .5(40) + 26
46 = 20 + 26
