combine the x's with x's, the y's with y's and the numbers with numbers to get
3x

How do you add the operation, 5x - 2y, 4x + y, and y - 6x?
Add the x terms, the y terms, and any other like terms.
+5x - 2y
+4x + 1y
-6x + 1y
---------
+3x + 0y
--> 3x

PS I used +5x, etc, just for alignment.
Also, you don't "add the operation", you perform the operation of addition, or you add the terms.
