Question 25688: Help Please
Here is my question: The four oldest people in golden City have lived a total of 384 years put together. The difference in ages for the youngest and the second oldest is 14. The second youngest is 3 years older than the youngest. the oldest is 20 years older than the average of the second oldest and youngest. What are their ages?
I keep coming up with 68 years as the youngest but it doesn't work into the problem - Where am I going wrong? Please help - daddy's daughter Answer by stanbon(75887) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Let the youngest be "x"
2nd youngest is "x+3"
2nd oldest is "x+14"
oldest is [x+(x+14)]/2 + 20 =x+27
EQUATION:
x + x+3 + x+14 + x+27 = 384
4x + 44 = 384
4x = 340
x = 85 (youngest)
x+3 = 88 next youngest
x+14=99 (2nd oldest)
x+27= 112 (oldest)
