Question 254953: This problem needs to be solved by linear combination method:
{9xsqrd - 6ysqurd =291
3xsqurd + 2ysqurd =197
both of these are to be bracketed on the left.
I am really struggling with this problem and am wondering if you must multiply the bottom set by 2 to make it compatible with the top set and where do I go from there? I hope you can help me soon.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Your two equations are:
(i)9x%5E2+-+6y%5E2+=+291
(ii)3x%5E2+%2B+2y%5E2+=197
step 1 - multiply (ii) by 3 to get
(iii)9x%5E2+%2B+6y%5E2+=+591
add (i) to (iii) to get
(iv) 18x%5E2+=+882
solving for x, we get
x%5E2+=+49
so
x+=+plus+or+minus+7
Now, find y.
3%2A7%5E2+%2B+2y%5E2+=197
147+%2B+2y%5E2+=197
2y%5E2+=+50%7D%7D%0D%0A%7B%7B%7By%5E2+=+25
y+=+plus+or+minus+5
