 I am trying to help my son with this applied math 10 problem and I need some help.
 A car is travelling at 60 km/h West away from Vancouver. It is 200 km away from Vancouver after 3 hours. Write an equation which models this situation. Use the equation to determine the distance away from Vancouver after 8 hrs. The teacher wants the question to be answered in this format below.

You can put this solution on YOUR website! There are problems with the givens If the car is traveling at 60 kmh it will not be 200 miles from Vancouver after 3 hours if the car started at the border of Vancouver.
 rt=d
 rate *time =distance
 rt=d
 60*3=180
 So it must have started out 20 km away from the border of Vancouver.
 but here we have to adapt
 Distance =20+60*t
 20=b
 60=m
 where t=time in hours
 so after 8 hours
 d=20+60*8
 i am guessing that the teacher wants something like
 y=mx+b
 this is the slope intercept form of  a linear equation
 y=60x+20
 where m=60 and b=20
 y=distance
 and x= time
 so we have
 after 8 hours
 y=60*8+20
 I do not understand your
 m=_____(x,y)=()
 we can solve our equation for m
 y=60x+20
 y-20=60x
 60=(y-20)/x
 m=(y-20)/x
 60=(y-20)/8
 But I don't see the point in that form.
