A ship must average 22 mph to make its 10 hour run on scheldule. During the
first _____ hours, bad weather forced the crew to reduce the speed to 16 mph.
What should be the speed for the rest of the trip to keep the ship on schedule?
You forgot to tell how many hours. I will assume it was 4 hours. Then the
ship went for 4 hours at the slow speed and 6 hours at the fast speed.
Let x be the fast speed
Distance at slow rate + Diatance at fast speed = Distance at regular speed
Using D = RT
(Slow rate)×(time at slow rate) + (Fast rate)×(time at fast rate) = (22mph)(10 hrs)
16mph(4 hr) + (x mph)(6 hr) = (22mph)(10 hr))
Solve that and get 26 mph.
--------------------------------------------------
If it was supposed to be 1 hour, the answer would be 22 2/3 mph
If it was supposed to be 2 hours, the answer would be 23 1/2 mph
If it was supposed to be 3 hours, the answer would be 24 4/7 mph
If it was supposed to be 5 hours, the answer would be 28 mph
If it was supposed to be 6 hours, the answer would be 31 mph
If it was supposed to be 7 hours, the answer would be 36 mph
If it was supposed to be 8 hours, the answer would be 46 mph
If it was supposed to be 9 hours, the answer would be 76 mph
If it was supposed to be 9.9 hours, the answer would be 616 mph
I'm sure it wasn't supposed to be that last one. :-)
