Question 250441: An experienced employee can enter tax data into a computer twice as fast as a new employee. Working together, it takes the employee 2 hr. How long would it take the experienced employee working alone? Answer by stanbon(75887) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! An experienced employee can enter tax data into a computer twice as fast as a new employee. Working together, it takes the employee 2 hr. How long would it take the experienced employee working alone?
-----------------------------------
Old worker DATA:
time = x hr/job ; rate = 1/x job/hr
----------------------
New worker DATA:
time = 2x hr/job ; rate = 1/(2x) job/hr
----------------------
Together DATA:
time = 2 hr/job ; rate = 1/2 job/hr
-----------------------------
Equation:
rate + rate = together rate
1/x + 1/(2x) = 1/2
Multiply thru by 2x to get:
2 + 1 = x
x = 3 hrs (time for experienced worker to do the job)
