Let the x be the unkowns.
Since he drove at an average of 60mph at x distance
abd Return at 40mph at x distance; Total time was 12 for the whole trip.
x%2F60%2Bx%2F40=12
Commom Multiple = 120
120%28x%2F60%29%2B120%28x%2F40%29=120%2812%29
Simplify
2x+3x=1440
5x=1440 (divide both sides by 5)
x = 288
288/60= 4.8
288/40=7.2
4.8+7.2=12 (it checks)

Hence, the total distance travelled was 288 miles; for 60mph the time was 4.8h and for 40mph the time was 7.2h.
