You can put this solution on YOUR website! In a region of the world, 18% of people still own a VCR,
54% own a DVD player,
and 62.28% own a VCR or DVD player.
-----------------------
Find the probability that a person from this region owns neither a VCR nor a DVD player.
P(VCR or DVD)' = 1 - P(VDR or DVD)
= 1-0.6228 = 0.3772 = 37.72%
----------------------------------------
Are the events "owning a VCR" and "owning a DVD player" statistically independent.
P(DVD)*P(VCR) = 0.18*0.54 = 0.0972
P(DVD and VCR) = P(DVD) + P(VCR) - P(DVD or VCR)
= 0.54 + 0.18 - 0.62.28
= 0.0972
--------------------
Since P(DVD and VCR) = P(DVD)*P(VCR), they are independent.
