if it takes 4 men 12 days to dig a hole, how long would it take 6 men?
It takes 4X12=48 man-days to dig the hole (i.e. 1 man could dig the hole in 48 days)
1 man----48 days
2 men -----24 days
3 men-------16 days
4 men-------12 days
5 men ----9 3/5 days
6 men -----8 days
Another way to look at this problem:
Let x=amount of time it takes 6 men to dig the hole
4 men work at the rate of 1/12 hole per day
1 man works at the rate of 1/48 hole per day
6 men works at the rate of 6/48 hole per day
So, our equation to solve is:
(6/48)x=1 (1 hole, that is)
6x=48
x=8 days
