Start with the counting numbers that you first learned: 1, 2, 3, 4, ...
Then add zero, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, ... and you have the whole numbers.
Then add the negatives, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, ... and you have the integers.
The rational numbers are any numbers of the form where and are integers. The word "rational" comes from the idea of "ratio," that is, a rational number is the ratio of two integers.
The irrational numbers are all of the numbers that are not rational, that is any number that cannot be expressed as the ratio of two integers.
