You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Graph the line with slope 1/3 passing through the points (-1,-1)
:
Use point slope formula; y - y1 = m(x - x1)
In your problem: y1 = -1; x1 = -1; m = 1/3
:
y - (-1) = 1%2F3(x - (-1))
:
y + 1 = 1%2F3(x + 1); minus a minus is a plus
:
Multiply what's inside the brackets
y + 1 = 1%2F3x + 1%2F3
:
y = 1%2F3x + 1%2F3 - 1
Which is:
y = 1%2F3x + 1%2F3 - 3%2F3
:
y = 1%2F3x - 2%2F3 is the equation to graph
:
Plot at least two points
x = -3
y = 1%2F3(-3) - 2%2F3
y = -1 - 2%2F3
y = -12%2F3
and
x = +3
y = 1%2F3(3) - 2%2F3
y = +1 - 2%2F3
y = 1%2F3
:
Should look like this:
+graph%28+300%2C+300%2C+-5%2C+5%2C+-6%2C+6%2C+.33x+-+.67%29+
:
You can confirm the solution by substituting -1 for x, and finding y
y = 1%2F3(-1) - 2%2F3
y = -1%2F3 - 2%2F3
y = -1, as you were given
