Please help me solve this problem

Factor 4x4  - y2

That is the difference of two perfect squares. Write

4x4 as (2x2)2

(2x2)2 - y2

Then use factoring formula:

A2 - B2 factors as [A - B][A + B]

In your problem:

(2x2)2 - y2

A = 2x2 and B = y, so

A2 - B2 = (2x2)2 - y2 =

[A + B][A - B] = [(2x2) - y][(2x2) + y] =

[2x2 - y][2x2 + y] =

(2x2 - y)(2x2 + y)
