Convert the dollar amounts to cents as follows:
$3.00 = 300 cents
$1.14 = 114 cents
Then 300 - 114 = 186
Also, 186 cents = $1.86
That's one way to do it.
Or, do it straight on as follows:
$3.00 - $1.14 = $1.86
