Question 24563: New York City and Washington DC are about 240 mile apart. A car leaves New York City at noon traveling directly south toward Washington DC at 55 miles per hr. At the same time and along the same route, a second car leaves Washington DC bound for NYC traveling directly north 45 miles per hr. How far has each car traveled when the drivers meet for lunch at 2:24 p.m.?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let x be the time.
45x+55x=240
100x=240
x=2.4
You know that the trip now took 2.4h, now to find the distance, but mulitplying each cars' speed by 2.4

45(2.4) = 108
55(2.4) = 132

Hence the car with the speed of 45mph travelled 108 miles and the car with the speed of 55mph travelled 132 miles.
