It depends on what you know.

If you are given the slope, , and the -intercept, , then it is a simple matter of plugging values into the slope-intercept form:



If you are given the slope and another point that is not the -intercept, then first use the point-slope form:



where are the coordinates of the given point.

Then you have to do the algebraic manipulations to rearrange the equation you just derived into the slope intercept form, thus:

If you not given the slope, but you are given two points, then calculate the slope using the slope formula:



where and are the coordinates of the two given points.

You can then proceed as above using the computed slope and one of the given points.

In any case, you must be able to determine the slope and a point on the line or two points on the line in order to write any equation representing the line. Once you have created any equation, simple algebraic manipulations are all that are required to turn it into the slope-intercept form.

You may encounter problems where the slope is not given to you directly. If you know that the line you want is parallel to some other line, then the slopes are equal. If you know that the line you want is perpendicular to another line, then the slopes are negative reciprocals of each other.
