Well each square, apart from the end ones, show 2 sides. The end ones show 3 sides. So two ends have 6 sides showing plus the four other squares with 2 sides each. This equals 14. The perimeter is 14 cm.

The perimeter of each of the 1 cm by 1 cm squares is 4 cm. Since there are 6 of these little squares, the total perimeter is 6 times 4 equals 24 cm. BUT!!! When you arrange the squares into the shape of an L, no matter what configuration you make (how tall or squatty the L is), there are 5 places where the squares meet and each of these places subtracts two sides, or 2 cm from the total. 24 - 10 = 14 cm for the perimeter of the L.
