You can put this solution on YOUR website! A winery has a barrel to hold chardonnay. An inlet pipe can fill the barrel in 6 hours, while an outlet pipe can empty the barrel in 9 hours. How long will it take if both pipes are open?
--------------------
inlet DATA:
time = 6 hr/job ; rate = 1/6 job/hr
----
outlet DATA:
time = 9 hr/job ; rate = 1/9 job hr
---------------------
Together DATA:
time = x hr/job ; rate = 1/x job/hr
---------------------------------------
Equation:
rate - rate = together rate
1/6 - 1/9 = 1/x
Multiply thru by 54x to get:
9x - 6x = 54
3x = 54
x = 18 hrs.
---------------------------
The tank will be filled in 18 hrs.
