You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Pencils = x
Pens = 7+x

0.45(7+x)+0.40(x)=10
3.15+.45x+0.4x=10
0.85x=6.85
x=8 (rounded)

7+8=15

Hence he can buy 15 pens and 8 pencils.
