Question 24047: A baker has a 30lb mixture of lour and sugar which is 40% sugar. How much flour must be added to the mixture to make it 20% sugar.
(I don't need the answer, I am having difficulty on what formula to use to solve the question)
Answer by longjonsilver(2297) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Let x = amount of flour to be added.
Also, convert the question to flour too, rather than sugar. So, 40%sugar is 60% flour and 20% sugar is 80% flour.
Initially we have 30*0.60 and x*1.00
Finally we have (30+x)0.80
This is the method: what is before is added together to make what comes after. So, the question will leave out one of the weights/volumes, because it throws students...the 30+x will throw a lot of students.
So, put them equal and you get 30lbs as the answer
