Let x = amount of flour to be added.
Also, convert the question to flour too, rather than sugar. So, 40%sugar is 60% flour and 20% sugar is 80% flour.

Initially we have 30*0.60 and x*1.00
Finally we have (30+x)0.80

This is the method: what is before is added together to make what comes after. So, the question will leave out one of the weights/volumes, because it throws students...the 30+x will throw a lot of students.

So, put them equal and you get 30lbs as the answer
