Question 238759: Please help (I hope this is the right section :-|
The question reads:
Place >,<,= between each of the following pairs to make true sentences.
a) 4/5 and 120/150
b) -6/5 BS -7/6
C) -4/20 AND 4/-20
a and c are equal (I beleive!!)
But I have no idea what BS means. Thanks for your help!
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Hello,
You are spot on regarding a & c being equal.
a) 4/5 and 120/150
b) -6/5 BS -7/6
C) -4/20 AND 4/-20
As far as what BS means--I have not run across that. Check to make sure you copied it correctly. If so, look in the back of your book in the index and see if you can find it. As far as solving b, first get both fractions with common denominators. Multliply the first by 6/6 and the second fraction by 5/5. This gives you:
-36/30 and the second fraction -35/30
Now you can see what that -36/30 is lesser than -35/30 (Note: this is a bit tricky because we're dealing with negative numbers)or in other words:
-6/5 is lesser than -7/6

You can put this solution on YOUR website! For a) to be equals then 4 * 30 AND 5 * 30 would have to equal 120/150 which it does.
b) 5 goes into -6, -1 times remainder -1/5, 6 goes into -7, -1 times remainder -1/6 OR -6/5 = -1&1/5 OR -1.20 -7/6 = -1&1/6 OR -1.1666667
So -6/5 < -7/6 (-7/6 is nearer to zero)
c) yes this is equals because a negative number divided by positive number is always negative and vice versa.
