Question 238381: Trying to assist son with homework that is due Monday. I never took algebra in high school it was an elective and I should have but never did take it so it is difficult to help him but I guess we are learning together. If you could please explain the answer so I could know how to explain it problem to him that would be great.
1) Find and equation of the line that passes through the given point and has the given slope. Express answer in slope intercept form. (8,0), m= -3. Could you tell me what the formula is for one given point.
2) Find an equation of a line satisfying the given conditions. Express in standard form.
parallel to 3x-y= -5 and passing through (-1,0) Please provide formula
Thanks for any help

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
we parents have to stick together...

1) the general point-slope form is ___ y minus "y-coordinate" equals slope times (x minus "x-coordinate")
___ in this case ___ y - 0 = -3 (x - 8) ___ or y = -3x + 24

2) for the lines to be parallel, the slopes must have the same value
___ in this case, the left side of the equation stays the same
___ use the given point to find a new value for the right side
___ 3(-1) - (0) = -3
___ so the new equation is ___ 3x - y = -3
