I've read your problem several times. I don't see any other way to interpret: "I am two whole numbers which equal 123..." other than: I am two whole numbers which sum is equal to 123. However, if that is the case, this problem has no solution. If the lesser number subtracted from 123 is 45, then the larger number must be 45. Yet 123 minus 45 is 78, hence 45 cannot be the larger number. You have something wrong with the way you have stated the problem, or your teacher is trying to get you to recognize that there are certain problems that have no solution.
