I like to treat it like a standard multiplication format you're used to with just numbers with the exception you go from left to right on the bottom row. Consider the x term as you would any number ONLY keep it separated from the real numbers.
Start multiplying with the lower x*x=x^2 then +x*3/4=3x/4
Now multiply the -1/4*x=-x/4 then multiply -1/4*3/4=-3/16
(x+3/4)
(x-1/4)

X^2+3X/4-X/4-3/16 Now combine like terms. 3x/4-x/4=2x/4
X^2+2X/4-3/16 ANS.
