Solve the expression within the absolute value sign first.
That equals 5 - 4^2 + 1 = 5 - 16 + 1 = 6 - 16 = -10
Your equation becomes:
8 - 3 |-10|
Since |-10| = 10, then your equation becomes:
8 - 3*10 = 8 - 30 = -22
