Question 230592: For this question I already have a picture of the graph, so I can see the end result, but I do not know how to get to it. Thanks for your help!
Graph the function:
f(x)=
{x+1 if -8≤x<5
{-8 if x=5
{-x+8 if x>5

You can put this solution on YOUR website! This is called a "piecewise function. The graph has to be drawn in 3 pieces.
Over the interval from x= -8 to x=5, draw the graph of y=x+1, but ONLY from x= -8 to x=5. Put an SOLID circle at the value of x=-8 since this endpoint IS included. This is the point (-8,-7). On the other end of the line segment, at x=5, put an OPEN circle, since this end point is NOT included. This would be the point (5,6).
Next, at x =5, plot the point (5, -8). This is just an isolated point that may or may not connect with the other line segments.
Finally, for values of x larger than 5, all the way to infinity, graph the line y=-x+8. Plot the point (5, 3) with an OPEN circle, and from this point graph the line y=-x+8, which has a slope of -1. As an example you could let x=6, then y=2, or x=8 and y=0. Connect these dots, and continue the line to infinity.
