This is the simplist way to do these questions.
you have to find the common denomonator, but sometimes the number is really large and makes the rest of the problem hard. so the best way I have found to solve these problems is to multiply both sides by the denomonator of both sides. It will cancell out the number that is the same and leave you with the number to multiply the top number with. thus getting rid of your fraction.
for your example
(p+3)/4=(p-1)/6
(4)(6)*(p+3)/4 = (p-1)/6 *(6)(4)
the 4 cancells on the left and the 6 cancells on the right leaving
6*(p+3)=(p-1)*4
solve
6p+18=4p-4
6p-4p=-18-4
2p=-22
p=-11
