| Question 228488: I am trying to answer a word problem, and I am sure there is a formula that should be used, but I am at a loss. Here is the question:
In wood shop, they only make 3 legged stools and 4 legged tables. If you know that they have a total of 31 legs for the day of production, how many tables and stools were made that day?
I just started trying numbers and came up with:
 4 tables and 5 stools
 7 tables and 1 stool
 9 stools 1 table
but I am not sure if this is right, and how I really should be solving based on the information given, please help!

You can put this solution on YOUR website! In wood shop, they only make 3 legged stools and 4 legged tables. If you know that they have a total of 31 legs for the day of production, how many tables and stools were made that day? --------------------------
To get a definite answer you have to know the total number of stools
 and tables produced.
 --------------------------
As it is you can only form one equation:
 Leg Equation: 3s + 4t = 31
 -----------------------
Then you have to look for a whole multiple of 3 and a whole multiple
of 4 that add up to 31.
 ----
You have already figured out those number pairs.

You can put this solution on YOUR website! dear student , i am confident to give here the statement that your all 3 answers are correct
here we have to consider let x 3 legged stools are made and y no of tables are made
here we have to consider 3x+4y= 31 as
we have to solve by trial and error method
 your answer is correct
now question arises which one answer is correct
it depends upon the requirement of customer ....(i think so )beside this your answers are 100% correct ,i am confident
if you have any quetions please feel free to contact
 thanks
 faithfully
