Question 227444: Are these lines parallel, perpendicular or neither?
5x+y=7 x=5y-12

You can put this solution on YOUR website! Manipulate both equations so that it is in the "slope-intercept" form:
y = mx + b
where
m is slope
b is the y-intercept at (0,b)
.
5x+y=7 (equation 1)
y = -5x + 7
.
x=5y-12 (equation 2)
-5y = -x -12
y = (1/5)x + 12/5
.
By inspection,
slope of equation 1 is -5
slope of equation 2 is 1/5
.
Since the slopes are "negative reciprocal" (multiplied together gives a -1), the two lines are perpendicular.
