Question 226682: I need help with figuring out how to do a problem like this:
Solve the following systems of equations using any method. Check each solution, if possible:
a. -2x+3y=1
2x+6y=2
solution:
Solve the second equation for x
(you could solve for y - it
doesn't matter).
2x + 6 y = 2 becomes x = -3y +1
Now, substitute -3y +1
for x in the first equation. This gives
the equation -2(-3y +1)+3y = 1
6y -2 +3y =1
9y -2 =1
9y= 3
y=3/9 or y = 1/3
Now, substitute 1/3 for y in
either equation and solve for x.
(We use the second equation below.)
2x + 6(1/3) = 2
2x + 2 = 2
2x = 2- 2
2x =0 , x = 0
The solution is the ordered pair,
(0, 1/3).
now you can check where you see x just replace with 0 , and where see y just replace it with (1/3)..
good luck
