Step 1. Let x be one number

Step 2. Let 47-x be the other number since their sum is 47

Step 3. Let 47-x-x=5 be the difference be between the two numbers

Step 4. Then 47-2x=5. Solving yields the following steps

47-2x=5

Add 2x-5 to both sides of the equation

47-2x%2B2x-5=5%2B2x-5

42=2x

Divide 2 to both sides of the equation

42%2F2=2x%2F2

21=x then the other number is 47-21=26. Note the difference between these two numbers is 5.

Step 5. ANSWER: The numbers are 21 and 26.
