1100/.089=$12,359.55
Good way to remember is that your answer must be bigger than the given in this case. So if multiplying doesn't give you that relationship you are looking for, then divide.

Another way of looking at this problem:
The question says, "8.9% of 'some number' equals 1,100--what is the value of some number'?" Let's call the number 'x'.
.089x=1100
x=1100/.089
