You can put this solution on YOUR website!
One car traveled for 78 minutes.
The other car traveled for 144 minutes at a rate 5 km/h faster than the first car.
If the faster car went twice as far as the slower car, how far did each travel?
:
convert 78 min to hrs: 78/60 = 1.3 hrs
convert 144 min to hrs: 144/60 = 2.4 hrs
:
Find the speed of the cars
Let s = speed of the 1st car
then
(s+5) = speed of the 2nd car
:
Write a distance equation; dist = time * speed
:
car 2 dist = twice car 1 dist
2.4(s+5) = 2*(1.3s)
2.4s + 12 = 2.6s
12 = 2.6s - 2.4s
12 = .2s
s = 12%2F.2
s = 60 km/h speed of car 1
and
65 km/h speed of car 2
:
Find the distances:
Car 1: 60 * 1.3 = 78 km
Car 2: 65 * 2.4 = 156km (twice as far)
