There were 6 more women on a committee than men. If the committee was made up of 30 people, how many men were on the committee?

Step 1. Let y be the number of men.

Step 2. Let y+6 be the number of women

Step 3. y+y+6=30 since the committee was made of of 30 people.

Step 4. Solving yields the following steps

2y%2B6=30

Subtract 6 from both sides of the equation.

2y%2B6-6=30-6

2y=24

Divide by 2 to both sides of the equation

2y%2F2=24%2F2

y=12 and x=12%2B6=18 and note the total is 30 people.

Step 5. ANSWER. There are 12 men in the committee.
