Question 221277: Okay, I am in a basic math class at the Art Institute online. I do not want the answer given to me. I am trying to figure out how to set the problem up so that I can answer it myself. I went to this site, http://oakroadsystems.com/math/convert.htm, but I do not understand where to put which numbers. The problem is 1mm = _____cm. The following is the information that I am given in my lecture.
Unit of Length In Meters Relation with the British Standard Units
Kilometer (km) 1000 1 mi = 1.61 km
Meter (m) 1 1 m = 3.28 ft, 1 m = 1.09 yd
Centimeter (cm) 1/100 1 inch = 2.54 cm
Millimeter (mm) 1/1000 1 inch = 25.4 mm
I think I should be able to solve this with the information given, but I do not understand how to start the equation to solve it. Can someone please help.
Thank you,
Jacquie

You can put this solution on YOUR website! Okay, I am in a basic math class at the Art Institute online.
I think I should be able to solve this with the information given
--------------------
You have more info that you need. There's no reason to involve miles, feet or yards.
---------
This question is similar to "how many inches in a foot?", but not exactly.
The metric system is based on meters.
Then the prefices, centi, milli, and some others are used.
Centi = 1/100
Milli = 1/1000
A centimeter = 1m/100 --> 1 meter = 100 cm
A millimeter = 1m/1000 --> 1 meter = 1000 mm
--------
So, 1 meter = 100 cm = 1000 mm
1000 mm = 100 cm
Divide both sides by 1000
1 mm = 0.1 cm
-----------
This is the long way. Metric unit changes often require only moving the decimal point (you have to know which way and how far, tho).
For example, 2.54 cm = 25.4 mm Same numbers, only the decimal point is moved.
Both those = 1 inch, btw, exactly. No round off or approximation.
