"m varies directly as p" means that as 'p' goes up, 'm' goes up. Similarly, if 'p' goes down, then 'm goes down also.


This is almost (not exactly of course) like saying that m=p; however, they aren't exactly equal (they might be, but we can't say that for all cases). This is why the constant 'k' is thrown in to get the equation m=kp

So "m varies directly as p" translates to m=kp
