I worked it up like this but I think I an way off... (x=peanuts; y=fancy nuts)
x+y=12
1.5x+8y=76.5
-8x-8y=-96
1.5x+8y=76.5
-6.5x=-19.5
x=3
3+y=12
y=9
3lbs peanuts and 9 lbs of fancy nuts
3*1.5=4.5
9*8=72
72.00+4.50=76.50 Answer by ankor@dixie-net.com(22740) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Keli is going to make 12lbs of mixed nuts for a party.
If she can spend $76.50 on nuts and peanuts cost $1.50 a pound and fancy nuts cost $8.00 per pound.
How many pounds of each should she buy?
:
Let's do it this way and then look at what you did:
:
"Keli is going to make 12lbs of mixed nuts for a party."
x + y = 12
Arrange this equation to be used for substitution
x = (12-y)
:
"If she can spend $76.50 on nuts and peanuts cost $1.50 a pound and fancy nuts" cost $8.00 per pound.
1.5x + 8y = 76.50
:
Substitute (12-y) for x in the above equation
1.5(12-y) + 8y = 76.50
18 - 1.5y + 8y = 76.50
6.5y = 76.50 - 18
6.5y = 58.50
y =
y = 9 lb of fancy nuts
then
12 - 9 = 3 lb of peanuts
:
:
Check solution in the total $ equation
1.5(3) + 8(9) = 76.50
4.5 + 72 = 76.50
;
You are absolutely right!! Way to go!!!
