Question 21866: My daughter has this linear equation question and I don't know how to help her:
From 1960 to 1990, the average annual US consumption of pork dropped according to the linear model y=-1/3x + 62. The average annual consumpton of chicken rose according to the linear model y=7/6x + 31. For which years did the US consumption of chicken exceed the consumption of pork?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
he average annual US consumption of pork dropped according to the linear model y=-1/3x + 62. The average annual consumpton of chicken rose according to the linear model y=7/6x + 31. For which years did the US consumption of chicken exceed the consumption of pork?
PORK CONSUMPTION =Y=-1/3 X+62
CHICKEN COSUMPTION=Y=7/6 X+31.....WHEN THE OVER TAKING TAKESPLACE THEY WILL BE EQUAL AND DURING AN YEAR AND CROSS..SO TAKING EQUALTY
Y=7/6 X+31=-1/3 X+62
7/6 X+1/3 X=62-31=31
X(7/6 +1/3)=31
X((7+2)/6)=31
X*9/6=31
X=31*6/9=31*2/3=62/3=20.66
SO IN 21 ST YEAR THE ONSUMPTION WILL BE EQUAL AND THEN CHICKEN CONSUMPTION WILL EXCEED..THAT IS BY 1960+21=1981,THE OVER TAKING WILL TAKE PLACE
