Question 21826: I'm studying for the cbest test and unfortunatly when I was in school
I never did study algebra and I ran in to a few that really stumped me
and well I do not think i can pass this test if i do not learn how
they find out what y or x is. My son is cute he is trying to teach me
but I think that this way I can get help from here also.
if not thats ok I can always go get a bunch of books.

Lets say that im at the store and I want to buy some food and i only have 5 dollars. I go to check out(they dont charge tax) with my five dollars and my item, well lets say that the cashier doesnt have change for a five and the item that you are buying is an orange and it cost 3 dollars and you realise that if you buy an apple you can spend and even 5 dollars(and your hungry) so you can make an equation in your head.it all has to add up to be 5 dollars and the orange cost 3 dollars.x will be what we dont know, the amount the apple has to be.

3 + x = 5

so now we need to figure out x or the amount of money to spend on an apple. we want to get x alone so that we can find out what it is. Remember that what you do to one side you do to the other.we can subtract the 3 on both sides then teh x will be all by it self and we will know what it is.So

x=5-3
x=2

now we know that our apple has to be 5 dollars and thats how you do it
