i know the answer by trial and error is 12 dimes, but how do I put it into an equation? Thanks for your time and patience.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let Q = the number of quarters and D = the number of dimes.
Q = D+8 "There are 8 more quarters than dimes."
Each quarter is worth $0.25 and each dime is worth $0.10, so...
Q(0.25)+D(0.10) = $6.20 Substitute Q = D+8.
(D+8)(0.25)+D(0.10) = 6.2
0.25D+2+0.1D = 6.2
0.35D+2 = 6.2 Subtract 2 from both sides.
0.35D = 4.2 Divide both sides by 0.35
D = 12 and Q = D+8
Q = 12+8 = 20
There are 20 quarters and 12 dimes.
