Question 216149: Sum of two $$$$$'s is 2. Subtract one from the other the result is ==. Find the nummmmmmmmmm.
Answer by rapaljer(4671) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! x+y=2
x-y=8
If you simply add the two equations together, the x terms subtract out! You will have
2x=10
x=5
Now, plug that value of x back into the first equation:
x+y=2
5+y=2
Subtract 5 from each side, and you get
y=2-5=-3
To check, substitute the x=5 and y=-3 into the OTHER equation:
x-y=8
5-(-3)=8
This checks!!
For additional help with solving simultaneous equations, please see my own website. Do a "Google" or "Bing" search for my last name "Rapalje". Look for "Rapalje Homepage" near the top of the search list. Near the top of my Homepage, click on the link "Basic, Intermediate and College Algebra: One Step at a Time." Chooose "Basic Algebra", then select "Chapter 4" and look for Section 4.07 Systems of Equations. Here you will find explanations and examples that, according to my own students, make math easier to understand than traditional textbooks. See also the corresponding section in my "Math in Living Color" Section, where many of the exercises are solved in COLOR.
