Question 215483: The equation of the line that goes through the point ( 3 ,7 ) and is perpendicular to the line 3 x + 2 y = 4 can be written in the form y = mx+b where m is: and where b is:
So, I got 3x + 2y = 4
2y = 4 - 3x
y = (4 - 3x)/2
so m=2/3
then i plugged everything and got
y - 7 = 2/3(x + 3)
y - 7 = 2/3x + 2
y = 2/3x + 2 + 7
y = 2/3x + 9
Somehow its wrong, can anyone help? Thank you!

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The equation of the line that goes through the point (3,7) and is perpendicular to the line 3 x + 2 y = 4 can be written in the form y = mx+b where m is: and where b is:
So, I got 3x + 2y = 4
2y = 4 - 3x
y = (4 - 3x)/2
************ y = (-3/2)x + 2
m = -3/2
--------
so m=2/3 ** That's the slope of lines perpendicular, the neg inverse of -3/2. Odd that you would have gotten the right answer using 2/3.
----------
then i plugged everything and got
y - 7 = 2/3(x + 3)
**************** y-7 = (2/3)(x - 3) You had (x+3)
y - 7 = 2/3x - 2
y = (2/3)x - 2 + 7
y = (2/3)x + 5

Ok, you've got the slope of the new line correct. The negative reciprocal of the given line which has a slope: m+=+-3%2F2 is, of course, 2%2F3
Now you can write:
y+=+%282%2F3%29x%2Bb In order to find b, the y-intercept, substitute the x- and y-coordinates of the point (3, 7) through which this line passes.
7+=+%282%2F3%29%283%29%2Bb Simplify.
7+=+2%2Bb so...
b+=+5
The final equation is:
highlight%28y+=+%282%2F3%29x%2B5%29
