Two automobiles start at the same time from towns 440 miles apart and travel towards each other. One travels ten miles faster than the other. If they meet in 4 hours how far does each car travel.

Step 1. Let x be speed of one train and let x+10 be the speed of the other train.

Step 2. Let 4x be the traveled distance on one train and 4(x+10) be the traveled distance of the other train.

Step 3. Since the distance apart is 440 miles then 4x%2B4%28x%2B10%29=440 or 8x%2B40=440 or 8x=400. Then x=50.

4x=4*50=200

4(x+10)=4*60=240

Step 4. ANSWER: One train traveled 200 miles and the other train traveled 240 miles.
